“Leaders
become great, not because of their power, but because of their ability to
empower others.” – John Maxwell.
You
have no business leading if all you could think about is yourself. To lead and
be great in doing that, you have to think of giving power to someone out there.
While it is not expected you transfer the power invested in you to someone
else. You have to think of giving power to your follower via their own
expectation.
“The
mediocre teacher tells. The good teacher explains. The superior teacher
demonstrates. The great teacher inspires.” says William Arthur Ward.
Empowerment is not until you hand over cash or physical resources, your ability
to inspire and motivate your team or follower to be the best in the leading is
a great one. Everyone including a leader need inspiration and motivation. This
is what Ralph Waldo Emerson mean when he says “Our chief want is someone who
will inspire us to be what we know we could be.” To be a great leader, your
followers are your inspiration.
Check
yourself, are you selfish in your attitude? It is impossible to be pronounce a
great leader if other people’s pain is none of your business. According to
Marian Anderson “Leadership should be born out of the understanding of the needs
of those who would be affected by it.”
